How to pack for your dream trip...

2/13/2017

Are you someone that packs 30 minutes before walking out the door or someone that starts packing two weeks before you leave for your dream trip?
Packing can often be a stress inducing anxiety filled thing that everyone must do before leaving for your trip (unless you just want to go with the clothes you have on!). That being said, if you have a few practical packing tips you can discover that it can be a peace filled thing that makes you look forward to where you are going rather than makes you worry about what could you be going without. We hope that these tips help...
1. A Packing List - You can find a packing list anywhere on the internet specific to your location. Have a check list will give you peace of mind that you are not forgetting the essentials.
2. Rolling not folding - Rolling your clothes will save room and wrinkles. When you unroll your clothes you'll find them ready to wear immediately rather than wishing you had an iron to get out all of the wrinkles that came with travel.
3. Packing light - We encourage packing light for multiple reasons. This allows you to be more mobile and pay less on baggage fees. If you have room in your luggage you'll  be able to return with more souvenirs.
4. Lavender Sheets - These have been a life saver! Place a few laundry sheets throughout your clothing to make them have a fresh clean smell when you get them out.

We hope this helps for your next trip!

Traveling with a toddler on a plane...

You read that correctly. We had traveled domestically with our son for the past two years, but we thought we had met our match when we booked a trip to fly from Texas to Malaysia. This trip would include a sixteen hour flight from Houston to Taipei followed by a five hour skip and jump to Kuala Lumpur. The thought of doing this TWICE in six weeks with our two year old sounded daunting. As we verbally vented to our friends of what we were coming up with to entertain him and the thoughts we were having of how to get him to fall asleep we were introduced by a friend to the Fly Tot.

The Fly Tot is a new product that has been developed in the last couple of years specifically designed for toddlers to be able to fall asleep on airplanes. What is is is an inflatable cushion that fills the space between the seat bottom and the seat back in front of you. It includes a foot pump to fill it with air and does not take more than three minutes to fill up with air.

Our flight left IAH at 12:40 AM, and our little extrovert was wide awake up until takeoff. My wife and I got the Fly Tot out, pumped it up, layed his blanket on it, and told him this is his bed. See picture below. To our delight he woke up 11 hours later ready for breakfast. We will NOT travel without this, and we currently are letting friends borrow it as they travel to Hong Kong with their toddler. Fly Tot thank you from parents everywhere.

Check it out for yourself at www.fly-tot.com

Uganda is a wild ride waiting to happen. There’s adventure around every corner and endless opportunities to dive in deep to the culture. After working right off the Nile River for 6 years, I have found a thing or two to feed my need for adventure.
Sipi Falls: A breath taking slice of heaven that can keep you busy on a day trip or revitalize you for a week long stay. I love staying at the Lacam Lodge. Their property sits on the edge of the third of three waterfalls that wind through the Mt. Elgon hills. They offer a bunkhouse option as well as private bandas. You are able to have breakfast, lunch and dinner included in your stay. The coffee is praise-worthy: It is grown and roasted in the very hills you are sleeping in. There are great hikes throughout the area that can be booked through the Lacam Lodge. You can repel the waterfalls and head into the village to roast your own coffee. You can sit quietly in the peace and glory of the rhythmic crash of the waterfall as you watch the sun set over the valley... Coffee in hand. Be sure to bring your favorite book, a journal and your camera… They’ll be put to great use!

Rafting the Nile River: There are endless choices of great companies to raft the Nile with. I had my favorite experience with Adrift. Nestled in a quiet stretch of the river, they provide a rockin’ good time. You can choose a full day trip or a half day. From personal experience, do yourself a favor and go for the full day. They provide lunch midday as well as a cook out and cold beers at the end of an action-packed day. This is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared to flip, flop, laugh, be scared to death, and not regret a single moment. Pack up some of your favorite people to go with you, you’re going to want to share this experience!

Stand Up Paddle Boarding at Nile River Explorers: While working in Uganda full time, I found my soul longing for moments of solace. Some days that’s pretty hard to find when you stick out like a sore thumb. I found a nook of solitude at Nile River Explorers river front location. You can rent a paddle board by the hour and meander the banks of the Nile. I loved to go an hour or two before sunset and soak up the setting sun from my board. I love paddling up river, then laying down and floating my way back. This is just one of a handful of activities that N.R.E. offers. Be sure to swing off their rope swing into the river, it’s a blast!

Cold Beers at Adrift: Back to Adrift! It truly is a one-stop shop for all sorts of fun. I recommend cruising in just before sunset with a group of your favorite humans. Grab a couple of Nile Specials, the local beer, and settle in for views that will make your heart skip a beat as the sun tucks itself in across the river. Bring great conversation; the rest will fall into place.

Dig In, Get Dirty: If you’re looking to get your hands dirty and spread some love and grace, be sure to stop by our project in Kirugu in the Buikwe District. We sit on a little plot of land that serves as a Nursery and Primary School. With close to 300 kiddos in attendance and working alongside of hundreds of community members, we are pressing towards a sustainable village with every passing day. We love visitors and we love laughing and singing and dancing. If you’re in the market for anyone of those, be sure to stop by.
